Seminar on Rights and Entitlements of Domestic Women Workers

As part of the Labour Day Fortnight celebrations, Sakhi Kendra, in collaboration with the Domestic Workers Union, organized an awareness and empowerment seminar on the rights and entitlements of domestic women workers at Sahadullapur (near Kali Ji Temple), Kanpur. The seminar witnessed enthusiastic participation from approximately 110 women and adolescent girls.


The program commenced with a warm welcome by Ms. Prachi Tripathi, President of the Sakhi Domestic Workers Union, who appreciated the active participation of women despite the extreme heat, calling it a positive sign of growing awareness and collective strength.


A collective rendition of the song “Dariya ki kasam, maujon ki kasam…” set the tone for the session, delivering a strong message of self-transformation and social change. Youth leader Poonam emphasized that meaningful change begins with a shift in one’s mindset.


During the session, Ms. Prachi Tripathi encouraged women to remain aware of their rights, stay organized, and raise their voices against injustice. She also shared important information on protection against cybercrime.


Ms. Neelam Chaturvedi, General Secretary of Sakhi Kendra, introduced the APF program, highlighting plans to form groups of adolescent girls (10–18 years) and women (18–45 years) who will receive skill development and English-speaking training to promote self-reliance. She also spoke about the significance of May Day and the historical struggle for workers’ rights.

Counsellor Ms. Archana Pandey informed participants about the process of filing complaints with the Local Complaints Committee at the District Magistrate’s office and assured support through Sakhi Kendra.


Ms. Shaili, representative from the Women Welfare Department, provided detailed information on various government schemes, including Widow Pension, Old Age Pension, Kanya Sumangala Yojana, and Child Welfare schemes, along with guidance on the application process. She also explained the services of the One Stop Centre.


Counsellor Ms. Pushpa Tiwari motivated women to speak up against domestic violence and reiterated that Sakhi Kendra stands with them in every situation.

Ms. Maya Kuril shared information about additional welfare schemes such as Kanya Samriddhi, Abhyudaya Yojana, Family Benefit Scheme, and Marriage Grant schemes.


The program concluded with a call to action by Field Coordinator Ms. Kiran Tiwari, who urged women to unite, assert their rights, and work towards becoming self-reliant.


The seminar saw active participation from several members and community representatives, making it a significant step towards promoting awareness, rights, and empowerment among domestic women workers.
